The State Government’s plans to align a new Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney with long-term plans for transport and other infrastructure projects means it will be capable of delivering results, the urban development industry says.
The Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW (UDIA NSW) welcomed the Government’s announcement today that it would prepare a new Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney towards 2031, to be aligned with the Long Term Transport Master Plan and the State Infrastructure Strategy.
UDIA NSW Chief Executive Stephen Albin said that for too long, Metropolitan Strategies for Sydney had set out visions for housing delivery in the greater metropolitan area that were not supported by infrastructure delivery.

The Urban Development Institute of Australia’s NSW division (UDIA NSW) has launched the findings of its year-long research project, Building Blocks, that aims to define areas that are viable to kick-start housing delivery, with supporting infrastructure investment.
Building Blocks finds areas in North West and South West Sydney that are given Government priority under the Growth Centres program are not necessarily areas that can deliver the housing needed, particularly in the short term.

In recognition that this is the biggest opportunity in three decades to fix the state’s planning system, our detailed response recommends increasing the role of strategic planning, placing a greater focus on community consultation in the strategic planning phase, and the creation of a development assessment system that is geared towards effective outcomes, rather than being process-driven.
The urban development industry has welcomed suggestions from IPART that a "beneficiary pays” system to fund new infrastructure be investigated for NSW.
The Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW says IPART’s submission to the NSW Planning System Review follows calls from the industry for an overhaul of the infrastructure funding system - so all parties who benefit from new infrastructure share in the costs.
