NSW Building Professionals Board

Date: 23 Jul 2008

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST AND NOMINATIONS FOR THE NSW BUILDING PROFESSIONALS BOARD

The NSW Government’s planning reform legislation has now passed through Parliament. This is the first step in delivering a more efficient and transparent planning system for NSW.

One of the key elements of the reforms is to improve the accountability measures and standard of conduct for accredited certifiers.

The Honourable Frank Sartor, Minister for Planning, is now seeking suitably qualified people wishing to be appointed as a member of the NSW Building Professionals Board (BPB), which will be responsible for implementing elements of the certification reforms. People can:

  • Lodge an expression of interest; or
  • Be nominated by another person or organisation.

The BPB has been operating as a statutory authority since 2007. It was established in response to a Joint Parliamentary Select Committee report into the quality of buildings.

The role of the BPB is to promote and improve the quality of building and subdivision certification in NSW through the regulation and education of accredited certifiers.

The BPB has three areas of responsibility and accountability. In its governing role, it sets the organisation’s strategic direction, priorities and goals. In its advisory role, the BPB provides advice to the Minister on major issues or proposals facing the certification and building industries. Operationally, it plays a critical role in certifier accreditation and the investigation and enforcement of complaints.

Selection Criteria: Interested persons will be required to have knowledge of or experience in one or more of the following areas: building, construction or administrative law; the building and subdivision certification process under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act; the building industry; government administration; local development assessment; and consumer protection.

Interested persons should also have:

  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with multiple stakeholders;
  • High level communication skills;
  • Capability to drive high-profile outcomes in a credible and authoritative manner;
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.

An appropriate remuneration package will be negotiated.

Submissions addressing the above criteria should be made in writing to:

Director-General
NSW Department of Planning
GPO Box 39
Sydney NSW 2001

Interested people wishing to be appointed, or nominate, may discuss the matter with Veronica Young, Acting Director, Office of the Director-General on (02) 9228-6112. Information packages are available on request.

Closing date for submissions: August 8, 2008
